So...The Dark Knight

I realize this film is awfully mainstream for discussion in a group like this, but I think that it is worth examining because of the recognition that it has received based upon cinematic merit, rather than simply being loud and exciting.

A full textual analysis is beyond the scope of what I have time for at the moment, but perhaps this weekend I can write something more substantial.

The film primarily concerns itself with the concept of heroism in human nature, and whether it truly exists, or is, as the Joker suggests, merely an illusion. Contrary to popular opinion, however, I believe that the film's theme depends not so much upon the character of the Joker, though Ledger's performance is indeed superb, nor does it rest upon the shoulders of Christian Bale's Batman/Bruce Wayne, who carried the previous film, Batman Begins, so competently. Rather, it is the performance of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face that bears the most weight in the narrative. Eckhart had a difficult task in embodying what are essentially two different, but connected characters, and doing so in a manner that was dramatic without crossing over into the cartoonish exaggeration that could have so easily snuck into a performance like this.

As Harvey Dent, he manages to portray a sense of nobility and righteousness without becoming a stiff, lantern-jawed parody of the classic 'crusader for good'. He appears to be a man who truly believes in what he is saying, a sort of blind naivete that guides his actions and sets the stage for his eventual downfall. This is the type of performance, I imagine, that George Lucas had imagined for the character of Anakin Skywalker. But where Lucas failed to coax such a performance from his young star, Christopher Nolan succeeds in capturing a believable, if (necessarily) rushed portrayal of a "good man" who becomes corrupted. As Two-Face, I found that Eckhart's performance was slightly hampered after his somewhat cartoonishly monstrous appearance was revealed, but I understand that this was an homage to the source material, with which I am well acquainted.

Much has been made of the film's "darkness" by mainstream media critics, particularly Jan Wahl who maintains that the film was improperly rated (at PG-13), a suggestion that seems without merit to be as the film contains no graphic content or language that would place it into the Restricted category. Indeed, the film uses cutaways in a manner than I haven't seen in a Hollywood film within recent memory, a technique that gives The Dark Knight a small measure of the classic noir feel. And while much of the film feels gritty, dark, and pessimistic, in the end the film redeems the people of Gotham City by refuting the idea that humanity is, at heart, an ignoble creature. I would say that The Dark Knight is a much more optimistic film than, say, High Noon, a western which, while considerably less violent, took a much darker view of humanity, and never redeemed the town of craven, selfish men who abandoned their Marshall in his quest to defend them.

La Belle Captive

Waaaay back in the 80s, a boyfriend of mine told me about a movie that put him into a trance. He only saw it once, he could never find it again, and it become simultaneously his favorite movie and a lost object of desire.

The movie was La Belle Captive, and the whole lost object of desire thing is fitting, given that the director, Alain Robbe-Grillet, who had written the screenplay for Last Year at Marienbad, specialized in exactly that sort of thing.

It's ironic that LBC is now available on DVD, whereas LYM, which defined maddening, mesmerizing and infinitely debatable cinema for an entire pre-Lynch generation, has fallen into obscurity: available only on scratchy old VCR or way too expensive Euro-import DVD.

LBC is gorgeous and dream-like, both retro and ahead of its time. It blends all the incomparable charm of 20th century
Freudian/surrealist sensibility and the glossy slick urface production values of a 1980s perfume ad Old-world modernism meets postmodernism, complete with bloody-mouthed vampire chicks and girls on motorcycles.

Also, the more I see of French New Wave and rewatch Hitchcock, the more I realize what a giant plagiarist David Lynch really is.

Of Freaks and Men

This one is really hard to describe, except to say that film fans--especially fans of very old movies and cinema history, should see this. It's all gorgeous sepia, with lots of perverse visual references to Eisenstein, Vertov's The Man with the Movie Camera, and probably a lot of other Soviet silent classics I'm not familiar with. The difference is, the subjects are bourgouise people, not workers. And the setting is Victorian St. Petersburg (except it's filmed in the late '90s).

Also, the bad guys are pornographers, who make a nefarious living taking pictures of young girls being flogged. They work their way into two nice middle-class houses, destroy the families, and prey upon the young teenage children: a virginal girl (who secretly buys the flogging pictures from the pornographers), and a pair of adorable adopted Siamese twin boys. The young girl, as it turns out, digs the life of depravity and lives for her next flogging. One of the twin boys also digs dissolution, the other doesn't. What with their newfound subjects, the pornographers switch from still photography to the new medium of cinema, which, satrirically, was supposed to have 'given a voice to the common man.'

It's about a lot of things: cinema history, capitalism and pornography, the line between art and depravity, the sort of pervy melodrama that old quarter movies allude to. It's incredibly beautiful to look at, and very disturbing to watch.

Two free tickets for anti-corporate film suggestions

Tribespeople,

We're in the process of pulling together the program for The 2007 Anti-Corporate Film Festival (Oct. 19-21, www.countercorp.org), and are inviting cinema-savvy folks such as yourselves to recommend films that include some elements or themes on how corporations affect our lives.

These can include documentaries, narrative (fictional) films, animation, experimental, domestic and foreign, feature-length and short -- pretty much anything. The only caveat is that they need to have English subtitles.

If we end up screening a film that you suggest, we'll give you two free tickets to *any* film at this year's festival.

The fastest way to send us your suggestions is directly to the festival at submissions@countercorp.org.

You can also post your suggestions in reply to this post, but our volunteer staff does not check Tribe every day (unlike e-mail). If two people suggest the same film, the first suggestion we receive wins if we end up screening it.

Thanks, and look forward to hearing your ideas!

The Cinema of Sorrows

I have just started researching an essay on melancholy in the cinema - tentatively titled 'The Cinema of Sorrows' - and am compiling a list of films I have either seen or intend to see as part of my investigation. Would anyone care to suggest a text (either visual or written) that they think might be useful? No limits: arty/ trashy, old/new, Hollywood/World, feature/short, genre/experimental, book/magazine, theoretical/tabloid, web/hardcopy, etc..

Thanks.

Louis

P.S. Feel free to check out my blog (Voltaire's Monkey), which is composed entirely of visual and textual quotes from the worlds of art, cinema, photography, illustration, philosophy, social theory and literature, etc.. I have just posted an entry devoted to this topic, with an illustrated excerpt from a great article by Adrian Martin - as well as short quotations from Judith Butler and Anatole France.

Musicals

So I'm on winter break finally, and I celebrated it by having a real Sunday, which consisted of eating breakfast late and lounging around watching old movies at a decadently early hour.

Specifically what I was watching was My Fair Lady--which I don't think I've ever seen all the way through before. Man, that thing has a dark subtext. Rex Harrison plays a seriously unpleasant person, who really hasn't reformed. Eliza Doolittle's situation is actually quite grim. Shaw probably knew full well what the lives of nineteenth-century working class women was like. And what's with the full twenty minutes dedicated to the antics of her alcoholic abusive father getting himself stinking drunk the night before his wedding?

The Music Man freaked me out too, when I was finally made to watch it. It just seemed to me to be a vast pageantry of repression.

Are all musicals this subtly creepy?

wages of fear

I recently saw wages of fear on DVD from Criterion.
I found that Wages of fear made for approriate angst ridden and searing comparision to our current national endeavor toward Iraq. Kinda of an oily journey in our manifested destiny/tragedy.

Synopsis: One of the most nerve-wracking and exciting films ever made, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s masterpiece won the Grand Prize at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. An American oil company enlists four tough drifters for a high-paying suicide mission—transporting explosives across the rough terrain of Central America. Criterion is proud to present Wages of Fear in its original 148-minute version.

Bond and Essential Characteristics

Have you seen the new Bond film, Casino Royale?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381061/

If not, go. It's a bang-up flick that'll bruise your idea of Jame Bond. Martin Campbell did to James Bond what Ford has done to the Mustang, Electra to the Cruiser and any other reference of a retro classic theme that had grown weak, stale, unappreciated, out of touch with it's roots and revamped, for better or worse, to breath new life into and sold to a newer, younger audience while making the older fans; aw screw 'em. They're old and don't get it anyway.

If you hadn't heard of all the dissent about the Daniel Craig taking over the role, you probably don't follow entertainment news at all. I'll spare you the links and tell you people were so upset, they had dedicated websites to bashing the Mr. Craig and called for "true" fans to boycott the film. Casino Royale reminds me more of Snatch by Guy Ritchie than Dr. No, but that being said Snatch was a faster paced modern film using newer editing techniques and cinematic styling. It opens fast, and continues fast not pausing for a breath until well into the film.

For the first time, we truly get a personal look at James, without lapsing into the mushy crap we don't go to a Bond film to see. Bronson did a fine job as Bond, but fell victim to the same plague that spawns disinterest with series again and again; poor scripts and bad stories. The last great Bond story was Golden Eye, and before that...

Well I wanted to open a post draw out a discussion of
1.) essential Bond characteristics
2.) cinematic styles and their relation to the time AND of the Bond film of that time.

Looking at those aspects, what aspects of Casino Royale work or don't work; are appropriate or merely misused trendy tricks?
What about past Bond films?

I think about a film I saw with a dark haired beauty (a la Hedy Lamarr or Maureen O'Sullivan type) with sparkling eyes who was smitten with the lead actor(wealthy) who was engaged to another woman and didn't know she existed. She saw him at a carnival and arranged to pose as a gypsy fortune teller. Once she lured him into her tent, she read his fortune and told him that he wouldn't marry his fiancee. I saw this film as a child...and it still haunts me...anyone have a clue as to the title?

player's downfall in the public eye. For all those still doubtful that
Mel lost his mind while filming Apacalypto in Mexico, please follow the
instructions and see for yourself.

1)go to: www.quicktime.com
2)view Apacalypto's teaser 1
3)Pause the teaser as soon as you see the screaming monkey
4)go to the first frame of the screaming monkey
5)from there, go 6 frames back
6)behold the beauty of what naked dancing native girls, seclusion in
the Mexican wilderness, and a long history of alcoholism and
anti-semetic behavior will get cha.
7) enjoy and spread the word

New Avenues for Screenplays

Hello, everyone. Check out the below excerpt from an article in the March issue of Script Magazine. (And you might want to check out the whole article, as it has some other good ideas about different avenues for getting you script seen.) If you are at all interested in having Platinum Studios see your script, go to www.screenwritersubmissions.com (a small website we've set up to hopefully answer all your questions) and check out our program there or check out our main website at www.platinumstudios.com. Is this self-promotion? A bit, but I hope not enough to get me banned from this group. I really just wanted to share this opportunity with you all, as we're eager to find great writers. Also, this is really not just a post and run. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll be around here from now on.

COMICS NOT A LAUGHING MATTER
From
GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND OFF THE SCRIPT STACK
By John Scott Lewinski
Script Magazine Vol. 12, no. 2
March 2006

While so many film projects are being jump-started from magazine articles, books and especially comic books, some writers might look to translate their feature script to a more comic-friendly format.
Platinum Studios is an entertainment company with an active stake in more than 2, 500 characters that have appeared in hundreds of millions of comics in 25 languages in more than 50 countries. According to Lee Nordling, Platinum's executive editor, the company's library is continually expanding through its comics acquisition and publishing program.
"I feel terrible for screenwriters who have to struggle just to get an industry exec to read what they write, " Nordling said. "I also can't imagine how many talented writers this process wastes per year. Platinum's own unique niche in Hollywood is to adapt from comics that have been previously published or that we will be publishing (or financing for publication). Studios understand that we draw on a different talent pool than more traditional production companies, a talent pool that includes a lot of new, talented writers.
"Where this has added value for us is that if the development of an adaptation of
a comic falls through, we always have the source material with which to begin a new adaptation. This is much more difficult to do when a group is developing a project as an original screenplay and the direction for that screenplay needs to change. We prefer to develop from the comics medium as we believe that gives a property a life and history in an existing marketplace and offers a potential producing partner or studio a glimpse into the original vision of the story."
Nordling added a personal note: "I think it's cool for writers to have a completed story for the public to read which more closely reflects their original visions than most films are able to (due to the increasingly collaborative nature of film and television). "Anybody who looks at our web site can see that we have properties set up all over town-there's really quite a laundry list, so I recommend people check out our Platinum Studios News section on our site at Platinumstudios.com."

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

seeking contract advice...

Hi everyone,

Here's my situation: I'm directing my first feature-length indy movie. I have about 35 actors involved, including a few SAG members. I have NO budget and noone is getting paid unless the movie actually gets picked up and makes money.

I've had a few of the actors asking whether the project will be SAG deferred. I had a couple of other people involved that were supposed to be handling this but they dropped the ball leaving me to pick it up and deal with this myself. I don't know much about the process and am seeking advice on the procedure.

I have talked to SAG already and they just changed contracts. The only contract they offer that has a salary deferred agreement is the "student" project, but that only can be applied if it's a short (30 minutes or less). The next one up is the "Ultra-Low" budget contract but you have to pay the actors $100 a day along with retirement contributions and a bunch of other stuff I can't afford. SAG used to offer an experimental contract that would've fit this project but they eliminated that contract.

I want to offer my actors some peace of mind in the form of a contract but am not sure what I can do about this situation. SAG doesn't seem too friendly to the indy filmmaker that has no budget, so it seems like they're out.

Any suggestions?

Film/Cinema Studies - Grad Programs, where are they?

Hey guys... I'm new here, so bare with me if I say something silly...

I'm currently doing my BA in Interdiciplinary (Independent) Studies in Film Theory and Critisim. The program is super cool... yet tricky because I have to come up with my own curriculum. I think it's ridiculous that The University of Puerto Rico does not offer a defined area in Film Studies... non the less...

I'm doing this so I can prepare my self for an easy transition to a Masters in Film Studies... The problem is I'm having a very very very hard time finding Universitites around the US that offer such Grad courses as Majors.

So far the best that I've found at Univ. of North Carolina in Raleigh...

But I need more options...

Anyone??????

I'm currently studying Digital Art with Video Production at Thames Valley Uni in London

Some of my music is available to download at www.MashupTwins.com

let me know what you think.

You might like to join my tribe - http://protestforchange.tribe.net
It is predicted that unless we change the way we ’re living, we will destroy the Earth and ourselves within the next 1,000 years (Terence McKenna). I don't want to be responsible for the destruction of our planet, and i hope you don't either.

so join up, lets make a difference. Our activities will reflect the views of our members, probably starting with a protest against the commercialisation of Christmas

Anyone know of any good resources for film clips and/or film stills? I teach an "art of film" course and want to know if there is a better source than filming off my TV.

Martin Scorcese's Personal Journey Through American Cinema

Just picked it up the other day. Good introduction for those
who don't know about the industry. Particularly the insights and ponderings on what it takes to be a director in hollywood.
However, as Scorcese himself says from the beginning(and the title puts quite plainly)this is a Personal Journey. Those looking for a textbook course on American Cinema...this isn't it. Though some may be suprised on how much of classic hollywood
cinema is hit, as Scorcese says it would be impossible to
touch upon everything... a 4hour dvd set for 20$ america

anyone see this?

i just rented it. not really sure what to make of it. i suppose it's not much more than an extended study in mood/character...but quite grim and so detached that there isn't much sympathy for any characters, or even much logic in their actions...

what is it about scottish films and overwhelming bleakness? the weather? the mood in this one is similar to 'young adam', which was briefly in theaters this year... all resignation and moral ambiguity...
There used to be a tribe called Streets of Film Noir but I can't seem to find it anymore so I've started a new noir tribe called, simply, Film Noir, to fill the gap. The URL is Andthenshewalkedin.tribe.net for those interested. Hope to see you there.

My Own Cinema Studies

Hi everyone! Part of why I formed this tribe is, well, I couldn't find such a tribe already listed, and I'm currently in an individualized master's program -- I am working toward my M.A. in Cinema Studies.

Since my program is individualized, I have to create my own curriculum, and do a lot of my own networking to find people who are already in the industry or academic world -- if anyone in this tribe, or if any of you know anyone, who would be interested in helping out a film studies student on her own (either through curriculum/syllabus/reading list suggestions, or by being an 'instructor' in my curriculum) please feel free to drop me a line -- jcmadams@yahoo.com

Thanks! Let the free-ranging cinematic discussion begin!

I just rented the Criterion dvd of this old Carne film, Children of Paradise - it has been my favorite movie for over a decade, nothing can top it.

Wondering if there are other fans of the film, or those who are willing to be persuaded to rent it and then chat about it...

Timeless, poetic, magical and a must see for Cinema buffs.

So what's worth seeing that's in the theaters now?

I used to see 3 films a week. Now it's mainly independant and experimental films if I see any at all. The mainstream stuff usually doesn't hold my interest. However, if there is something very special circulating these days, let me know.

Best recent features that I've seen:
Under a Shipwrecked Moon (Antero Alli)
Cremaster 3 (Mathew Barney)

both are decidedly not mall material
